Good morning Is there such a thing as a standard proof load factor? I have looked across the web and it seems to me that the manufacturer is able to determine their own safety factor when applying proof loads to a lifting beam ranging from 2 upto 7, is this correct or is there a recognised norm? We normally apply a safety factor of 2 to items we design and use in house but this seems a bit "light" to me based upon what I have read so far. Any advice greatly appreciated. cheers

If the product comes under the machinery directive, which some lifting equipment does, then it is likely the harmonised standard which you really should be applying if available when you CE mark the kit (if it falls under the MD) would give guidance on safety factors.
Generally, a factor of 2 was historically OK, but now this would depend on other factors as lifts have got more complex. You need to remember also that the factor of two should apply to all applied loads.
