I am a Trustee of a small friendly charity based in Salford Manchester. We are recruiting for a part-time (approximately 14 hours a week, split over two days or several half days. However, this has to be agreed with Community Director in advance). The role is purely x6 months (26 weeks in total) and no longer, therefore, some hard targets to achieve in that time; we need someone competent, experienced and focused on delivery. We do have some systems set up by an outside consultancy, however, we need more focus on operational delivery of systems. The role will be focused on supporting the charity to review, set up, monitor, train staff and review safe systems of work to sure that its embedded and that board receive assurance that H&S is being suitably managed across its 3 premises (all loosely located in a small area of Manchester)

If anyone is interested, please PM me. We do have a JD for this role, however, please note due to probity and internal processes anyone that wants to apply for the role will have to fill in an application form and attend an interview. The suitable candidate should have a minimum NEBOSH general/NCRQ certificate and be competent in communicating the risk/health and safety agenda in a positive way to lay people that work or volunteer for our organisation.  The role will be paying the market rate. The rate will be dependent on the experience and qualifications of the person applying for the role.

It would be nice if new members to the forum bothered to read the rules they agree to at sign up, in this case:

8. Advertising of jobs, goods or services for commercial gain is not allowed.
8.3 IOSH Members may advertise the following job vacancies on the ‘Work Opportunities’ forum.

Unpaid roles such as work shadowing and volunteering,
Apprenticeship/graduate schemes,
Early-career internships which offer fixed-term posts of less than six months and pay the living wage as a minimum. Please note: IOSH does not support unpaid internships and will not carry advertising for such posts.

Whilst I agree that Carlos' posting is technically in breach of the Rules, these state:

8.3 IOSH Members may advertise the following job vacancies on the ‘Work Opportunities’ forum.

  • Unpaid roles such as work shadowing and volunteering,
  • Apprenticeship/graduate schemes,
  • Early-career internships which offer fixed-term posts of less than six months and pay the living wage as a minimum. Please note: IOSH does not support unpaid internships and will not carry advertising for such posts.
  • Applications must be made via https://www.iosh.co.uk/posting-jobs

However, the link provided doesn't work and doesn't if cut and past without the full stop at the end.

If what Carlos was offering was less than 6 months (say 25 weeks) or if the rule was amended to make the limit 6 months full time equivalent, then the advert would be within the rules if one could describe the role as an "early-career internship" (noting that the rules do not define the word "internship"!).

Alternatively if the role was indicated as being suitable for a graduate or apprentice, the stated time limit would not apply. Not inconceivable that a graduate or apprentice might be mentored by someone from a different discipline, whilst the post holder could also ask for some mentoring from HSE professionals via other channels including these Forums.

My guess is that at a time when some HSE advisers have been made redundant or have found difficulty in finding a job, this opportunity might be a very welcome chance to get some experience on their CV.

Carlos cannot comply with the rules that IOSH has laid down as the means of communicating an opportunity that would comply with those rules has been denied to him as a result of lack of maintenance of Forum functionality.

Which means EITHER that the opportunity cannot be brought to the attention of those looking on the Career Forum, OR any communication is not strictly compliant with the rules.

A simple root cause analysis of this would conclude that the underlying issue lies with IOSH.
