Good Morning, I'm looking for a bit of advice about CDM. Whilst I have worked in H&S for many years (Manufacturing) I have no CDM experience. Apart from the HSG L153, is there any information availbale for gaining an understanding at grass roots level. I have started a new role in an industry that I have not worked in before, and they have no CDM experience, but are now being asked to think about CDM with rgards to Installation and Design of their equipment.

CDM is relatively easy - don't get distracted with contractors etc trying to use CDM to settle commercial/business disputes etc. CDM is purely h&s don't get drawn into such arguments. CDM is just a generic system for design and construction activities - obviously. Ensure Clients know their duties, what information they are obliged to supply. What roles they are supposed to appoint - Principal Contractor, Principal Designer. Also how all 3 parties communicate and pass information. Ensure Designers / the project has a system for identifying hazards at the design stage and for removing/mitigating hazards at the design stage. Passing on information about remaining hazards. Principal Contractors to control site set up and day to day construction activities. PD to collate and create the h&s file.

Hi William I agree with Ian that for most situations CDM is relatively easy. However, the guidance in L153 is a bit simplistic - part of the downgrading that has resulted from HM Govt pressurising the Health and Safety Executive into producing "lite" guidance. You might find the Approved Code of Practice, L144 which supported CDM 2007 to be more instructive. I think that you can still download it for free from the HSENI website (i.e. HSE's counterpart in Northern Ireland)
HSENI always tends to change its legislation in line with that in Great Britain but with a time lag and last time I looked HSENI had not got round to superseding L144.

Yes CDM is on the whole easy, and I have done quite a bit of work for various clients over the years. It was a bit confusing at the start, but I went on a CDM awarness training package run by ROSPA. I dont know if they still run them but it did break the ice on the subject. It might just be worth a look.
