I'm gathering ideas on FLT controls in a specific area of our site.

For the most part, our site it well segregated with barriers, crossing gates and marked crossings, designated parking spots for FLTs. Our FLTs are fitted with directional lights that light up the ground 5m ahead, audible warnings when moving and speed restrictions (automatic) based on zone (5mph in warehouse, 3mph in production areas).

The area in question is too tight for barriers but is shared by operators and FLTs. There is a lot of activity in the area due to the nature of production. We have a well trained team that genuinely take safety seriously, seeing it as a value not just a 'number 1 priority', but I'm concerned that we may have an incident sometime in the future.

Any ideas on additional controls that could help? I'm willing to hear administrative controls, but would much rather take suggestions on engineering controls (heirarchy etc).

Carl,

It seems to me that there is already a lot of good controls in situ already. i think some guidance ie SAfe System of Work documented and passed to individuals working within the area. This could list some control procedures such as speed limiting, audible sounding to make individuals aware that FLT's are in operation and maybe marking out pedestrianised walking areas within the area to assist with the controls you are seeking to mitigate any future risk. There is already a lot of positives and the Culture and attittude seem to be a big part which will assist in mitigating any accidents that may occur.

Morning,

I assume that the FLT's are bringing / collecting goods etc. Could you have a staging area where by the Operatives move the pallets or product to a staging area with a pump truck, which is then collected by the FLT.

Could you also have a control whereby the Operative on the floor moves to a safe zone when the FLT is in the area, This does rely on human control, but could be an option.

Hello,

This sounds like a very similar setup to our production facility. Due to the very limited space, we cannot eliminate FLTs and production operatives from operating in the same space. That said, it is the production team who use the FLTs.

Alongside regular refresher forklift training and reminders, supervision, monitoring and a SSOW we have installed mirrors at certain blindspots and have empowered staff to take ownership of their own safety. We also have CCTV that is checked if a report of unsafe practices are made.

As mentioned above, it would be great if there was space to have a staging area but this site wa s not purpose built for what we undertake.

It sounds as if you have at least half the battle won with a good culture with those that put value on safety.

My suggestion would be talk to those affected in the area and see what thoughts and ideas they have to get them involved in any change to working practices.

It doesn't sound like there are many other options open to you. One possible addition to what you already have in place is to search for "wearable proximity warning systems" which might add another layer of safety. There are a few options on the market but basically allow your pedestrians to wear a tag that is linked to a sensor on the forklift and will trigger an alarm of they come to close together.

This is a US version but gives a good overvew of the type of thing that is available: https://www.bimplus.co.uk/ferrovial-tests-wearable-proximity-warning-system/

A quick search will find similar sytems available in the UK for you to look into.
