Posted By shaun mckeever Well said Ted! It is interesting to note that certain letters I used to use after my name - FIRE OFFICER - everybody would run around and do exactly what I said. Now I have a different set of letters - FIRE CONSULTANT - and I get challenged regularly. I think the use of post nominals should not be used. Personally I think it smacks of elitism and does not give any indication of the persons level of expertise in the subject they might be responding to.

"The discussion forums are intended for professional discussion and debate on a variety of issues relating to health and safety in the workplace." This refers to all fora and does not exclude the "chat forum". This was I think one of the points implicit in the original post? Thus the elephant may be a red herring? Quaere verum

Posted By IT Peter, Must strongly agree in two of my former lives I was asked to place my letters on cards etc ,even to the extent of displaying awards in my office (at the insistence of the GM) great result ,People would sit and look at all the certificates and awards and hesitate to ask questions ,it seems they were extremely uncomfortable. I took them down and removed the Letters from my cards also. After all the letters alone never prevented an accident ,its something like the yellow line will always prevent pedestrian accidents (A Great Myth) Andrew, Mate you would miss all the exciting bits like chosing Ties for various letters then if you stayed in NZ. A previous mentor (sadly no longer with us) advised me if you wish to sell something (H&S consultant, salesman, etc), then post nominal letters are welcomed. If not, then don't bother, as your employer knows your worth, has your CV, knows what you are capable of (otherwise you wouldnt be in the job in the first place). My view, let the achievements speak (often a good indicator of competency), not the post nominal letters!
