Maybe they would be put off because we waste 2 days discussing things like this. Especially since one of those days is a Sunday.

Amazing that people have time to post and contribute to this kind of thing.

No wonder we have a bad name for unnecessary paperwork.

Whilst I contributed earlier I must agree with the sentiments of the last few postings. It is becoming increasingly nauseous that some members are constantly harping on about this forum and providing their own slant on what it is/should be about. Why not just chill out. It is a Chat Forum! It does what it says on the packet...

If members of the public or the media see any of the following:

dissent, deviation from the original subject, humour, disagreement, spellng mistakes, poor grammar or any other human traits, they will understand that we are also members of the human race!

Sorry about the mantra.

Sorry Folks,

These are not chat forums. Whilst there is a place for joviality and light hearted banter, they are intended for professional discussion and debate on a variety of issues relating to health and safety in the workplace.

If this is "Not a chat forum" can somebody please tell me why it says OSH Chat forum at the top of the page.

Well said Ted!

It is interesting to note that certain letters I used to use after my name - FIRE OFFICER - everybody would run around and do exactly what I said. Now I have a different set of letters - FIRE CONSULTANT - and I get challenged regularly.

I think the use of post nominals should not be used. Personally I think it smacks of elitism and does not give any indication of the persons level of expertise in the subject they might be responding to.

well, post nominals are something that have been hard earned, and i can understand why some people would want to publicise their " status ",but personally, it would make no difference to whether or not i replied to a post or thread. sometimes, a posters experience in their field of work, or life in general, has a much greater relevance than their academic achievements.

For those who think they see an elephant in the room and applaud its recognition. The forum headline has led you to overlook the conflict with the first paragraph of the AUG.

"The discussion forums are intended for professional discussion and debate on a variety of issues relating to health and safety in the workplace."

This refers to all fora and does not exclude the "chat forum".
This was I think one of the points implicit in the original post? Thus the elephant may be a red herring?

Hi all, well nearly all.

My un-professional opinion is that many of you are just about to disappear up your [professional] backsides..............again.

Personally, if I need PROFESSIONAL h&s advice I ask my UNION for it, since the [professional] h&s advisors are busy advising my company how NOT to implement h&s policy and regulation/s. And getting paid very healthy [professional] fees for it.
In life, you don't always [or ever] get the best advice from the professional advisor.

If this is the level of so called professionalism, bickering over post nominals, I think I should have stayed in NZ, where the H&S profession is in it's infancy & has not as yet been subjected to barrack room politics.

Peter,

Must strongly agree in two of my former lives I was asked to place my letters on cards etc ,even to the extent of displaying awards in my office (at the insistence of the GM) great result ,People would sit and look at all the certificates and awards and hesitate to ask questions ,it seems they were extremely uncomfortable. I took them down and removed the Letters from my cards also.

After all the letters alone never prevented an accident ,its something like the yellow line will always prevent pedestrian accidents (A Great Myth)

Andrew,

Mate you would miss all the exciting bits like chosing Ties for various letters then if you stayed in NZ.

Have a look at the "5 regulations that require sufficient lighting" thread in the study forum.

Will anyone get this right?
Will anyone agree?
How does this help the poster?
How does this look in the public eye "Professionals" not being able to agree and answer to a study support question.

To me it highlight a number of valid points being noted here

wow!

What depth of feeling amongst us safety fraternity?

Post nominals or not?

A previous mentor (sadly no longer with us) advised me if you wish to sell something (H&S consultant, salesman, etc), then post nominal letters are welcomed.

If not, then don't bother, as your employer knows your worth, has your CV, knows what you are capable of (otherwise you wouldnt be in the job in the first place).

My view, let the achievements speak (often a good indicator of competency), not the post nominal letters!

Alex

PS, hold Dip EM, I.Eng, MIIE, MIIRSM, MIQA, Tech IOSH, AIEMA, and none are mentioned on my business cards, e.mails or whatever.
